The Law as Tutor

The second purpose of the law was that it was designed to act as a “custodian” until the incarnation of Christ (Gal. 3:24 RSV). The Old Testament saint may not have fully realized this, but Paul, reflecting back on the covenant, now clarifies that purpose in Galatians 3:24-4:1. In this section, he explicitly answers the question of the purpose of the law posed earlier in 3:19a. He had just refuted the misunderstanding of the law by the Judaizers and was now presenting a positive exposition of the true purpose of the law, using the word paidagŌgos (“custodian”).40
